Excellent game! I spend hours and hours playing it on my old 360, I was so happy when I saw that it was on steam. Very much a classic.. awesome game great strategy. Gave it a chance, it sucked.. 6.4.2018. Game #30Before I start this review, let me tell you a story. It’s 2002 and I am 13 years old. A new game came out that everyone seems to be playing called Warcraft 3. Up until then, all I played was platformers so this was a new experience for me, an experience I am not familiar with. In Elementary school I have a friend called… let’s just call him “S”. Anyway, S is the one that got me into Warcraft 3. He kept praising it and telling me how great it is. It was a great game. I loved the campaign and I loved the lore but that wasn’t what S was talking about. He was talking about multiplayer or rather about Battle Net and online play. Since neither of us could afford a gaming PC in 2002 we had to go to one of those PC zones where we would play Warcraft 3. Anyway, the very first time I played against S (who at that point was already experienced with Warcraft 3) I lost, so we played again, and I lost again. Every other day we would go to the PC zone and I would lose to him again. I don’t want to exaggerate, but I think I can safely say that in all of my time playing Warcraft 3 online, I lost to S at least 50 times. So after seeing me lose so many times, S finally decided to teach me how to play the game… right? Nope, he never taught me how to play better. I considered him a best friend in elementary school too. I was young and dumb and was just excited to have someone to play video games with me and I really didn’t care about whether I win or lose, but a single win would have been nice. Nope, not a single one. S kept telling me that there really wasn’t anything he could teach me and that I would just have to learn on my own. That was until the day, where S got his own copy of the game, and started playing Online. He started bragging to me about the ranking system but more importantly, he told me of how he had dominated someone in a match and that that someone was so impressed, he/she asked S to teach them how to play. S said “YES”. He also bragged about how that someone called them “Master” but enough about that. The point is even after winning over 50 games against me, he never even considered teaching me how to play and, again, I considered him a best friend. Needless, to say, I stopped playing Warcraft 3 with him, shortly after that and never wanted to touch a strategy game ever again.Fast forward to 2018, I am doing my steam challenge and there is a Strategy game on my list. Worst of all, it’s a war strategy. Two things I hate the most about video games. I was extremely reluctant about playing it and upon starting it, I wanted to quit a few times, but I didn’t give up. I didn’t let this game beat me and I didn’t want S to beat me. So I played it and I got better at it and finally, I beat it (the campaign) and I had a lot of fun.Battlestations Midway takes place during World War 2. It starts from the moment when the Japanese forces attack the American forces at Pearl Harbor and ends after the battle of midway. Naturally, you play as the Americans.It’s almost like this game knew I hated strategy games because it really eased me into itself. First, I played a lengthy tutorial where the narrator encouraged me on how to play the game. Unlike many people out there I don’t mind lengthy tutorials because I think that if a game has a long tutorial, it really cares that the player learns how to play the game properly. These tutorials were optional but I still went through all of them.It was time to start the game. The game is basically a bit of strategy game and a bit of an action game where you control naval and air vehicles in order to fight the opposition. What this basically means is: you have an overhead map, just like in pretty much all strategy games and you issue your units commands through it. Once they are on course, you can take a unit and take control of it through a third person camera and directly control it. It’s like saying: GO! ATTACK! Gah, you guys suck! LET ME DO IT!” Strangely enough, after learning how to play the game properly, I spent very little time directly controlling units and most time on the overhead map and only ever went into the third person of a unit to watch a key moment for cinematic value. Controlling ships and airplanes feels realistic. You can naturally manage their movement and their firing, but you also need to make sure they are repaired correctly and that they retreat to base once they run out of bombs or torpedoes. Actually, I was a bit cruel to my soldiers because of that. See, once an airplane drops its torpedoes and bombs, it needs to return to base in order to replenish them and that takes forever. What I did instead was just crash my empty planes into the water or the enemy and the base just spawned new ones. Cruel? Yes. More effective? Definitely.The campaign follows the story of two friends Henry and Donald. Henry is a Navy Officer and Donald is a Pilot. The story is, by far, the weakest aspect of this game. The Americans are portrayed as the good guys who had no idea why the Japanese attacked them while the Japanese are portrayed as … evil (GRRRR ME EVIL). Politics aside, in between missions you watch Henry and Donald’s story as they move up in ranks after performing well in missions. What really kills this is the horrendous voice acting. The voice actors put zero efforts in giving these characters emotions. In the end, since the game doesn’t care, why should we?Luckily the gameplay saves it. Controlling your units from the map is easy and intuitive. It’s fun to watch your tiny little ships and planes attack the enemies and if you really want to get into the action, you can just assume direct control of a unit (or even a fleet) and show them how it’s done. Well, that’s the idea anyway. While controlling ships is fine and all, controlling planes can be a nightmare. I think the idea was to make them move realistically, but after seeing how sensitive the reticule was, I just let the AI do the driving as I watched, not daring to touch anything. Once you finish the campaign, you can also take on some vehicle specific challenges. These can be fun and can get you ready for the real challenge, which is online. At least, that’s what I would like to say but sadly, I haven’t played this game online since the online matchmaking was hosted by now late gamespy. Luckily, if you are really keen on playing this game again, you can set up a Local game and duke it out with your friends.Yes, this game is old. Yes, the gamespy servers are down. Yes, the voice-acting and the story that follows along is awful but I forgive it because the game is fun to play, especially because it was fun to me. I haven’t touched a strategy game since elementary school and this game, despite its flaws has made me excited for the genre. It’s done the impossible. If you are looking for a strategy / action game about navy and air battles, this is probably a good one. I realize that I am definitely not an expert when it comes to strategy games so let me finish my review with this: I consider myself a person who hates strategy games and yet I was able to have a lot of fun with this game. As for “S”. After we finished elementary school, I pretty much lost contact with him. I hear about him from time to time but I just don’t care. Even if you take away my experience with Warcraft 3, S was just a person that enjoyed watching me suffer and loved watching me humiliate myself. I am happy to say that now that I’ve played this game, I may even be looking forward to my next strategy game.Next game: Beatbuddy: Tale of the guardians. Pretty cool game that mixes RTS and action together ultimately leading up to the Battle of Midway during World War II. You can take command of any unit at anytime which puts you right in the thick of the battle. Campaign is pretty short that only lasts a few hours and there a few additional challenges after that.. keyboard and mouse controlling the air fighters is a nightmare. And you cannot skip this part.. hey guys try this game its super epic u will have tons of fun i promise and oh battlestations pacific is a bit better too!. Battlestations Midway is an older game that still holds up over time. You take the role of a young navy lieutenant commanding a PT Boat during the Assault on Pearl Harbor. The campaign follows his rise to command from Pearl Harbor to the Midway campaign. For gameplay, you can command from the Tactical Map or personally take charge of the fight. Ship controls are easy enough, but the fighter controls are not the easilest to control using a mouse. The game has ship, fighter, and submarine challenges in addition to its campaign. I recommend it for players who like military history or want a quick diversion from the real world. This ran without any problems on my Windows 7 computer, but I did not mess with the multiplayer aspect of the game.. Gameplay is somehow weird. I know that the game is old but, still i cant blow enemy aircraft. Boats are okay. So nope.
